May is American Wetlands Month
Wetland image
A wonderful opportunity to CONSERVE WETLANDS and help educate others about their importance. Join thousands of Americans each May in celebrating the uniqueness, beauty and importance of wetlands.
In 2007, the theme is Alien Invaders: Invasive Species and Wetlands. Because they are alien to North American wetland landscapes, species like Purple Loosestrife and the New Zealand Mud Snail wreak havoc on the plants and animals that are native to our wetlands.
Every year, thousands more of these invasive species are introduced into our waterways, costing us billions of dollars in economic losses and causing irreversible damage to some of our most beautiful and valuable landscapes.

FIRE DEPARTMENT NEWS

Since officially forming the Town of Beloit Fire Department in the summer of 1956, the Fire Department has been providing quality emergency services to residents and visitors in the area. Today, the Fire Department consists of 10 full-time and 30 paid-on-call firefighters who responded to 916 emergency calls last year and provides numerous non-emergency functions to assure the safety in the Town. Due to the wide variety of services provided, the Fire Department is more realistically an emergency services department.

In February 1957, the current Fire Station #1 was dedicated and the Fire Department officially went into business with the first structure fire occurring the next day at Pat's Market on Madison Road. In 1969, Fire Station #2 on Inman Parkway was build and currently also serves as the Town Police Department.
Through the years, the Town's needs were such that a combination full-time/volunteer department was warranted to provide the needs of the area. Currently, Fire Station #1 is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week along with 30 paid-on-call firefighters assigned to each of the two fire stations.

The Fire Department's equipment and apparatus includes three (3) engines, one (1) tanker, one (1) ambulance, two (2) support/utility vehicles and one (1) rescue engine. An order was placed with Seagrave  for a new fire engine. The anticipated delivery date is November 2003. Our response area includes all of the Town of Beloit, six sections in the Town of Newark, and all the Town of Rock south of the Airport on Hwy 51.

-ABOUT THE CHIEF- In October 2004, the Town Board appointed Fire Chief Dennis Ahrens who has been in the fire service for over 30 years. He was appointed in May 1989 Assistant Chief Dennis Ahrens and has been with the department since 1973. Chief Ahrens began his career with the Town of Beloit as a volunteer working his way up through the paid ranks. He has previously served as a Company Officer, Training & Safety Officer, and Union President. He holds numerous certifications in the fire service and an Associates Degree from Blackhawk Technical College . He is actively involved in the multi-jurisdictional Fire Cause and Origin Team serving as President. Chief Ahrens may be contacted directly at 608-364-2994.

-FIRE/EMS TRAINING- Because the fire and EMS industry demand a high level of training and continuing education, the Fire Department continues to place a high emphasis in this area. Over the years, the department has built a training tower behind Station #1 and serves as a training facility through Blackhawk Technical College for fire service classes and programs. Both full-time and paid-on-call personnel train weekly and receive hands on training in areas of EMS, firefighting, rescue, incident command, emergency vehicle operation, infection control, hazardous materials and tactical rescue. Often, you may see training being conducted in homes scheduled for demolition, or at area businesses and parking lots in addition to behind the station(s) or at the training tower. The training and continuing education programs provided adhere to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and the EMS standards set by our resource hospital, Beloit Memorial. While all members of the department are certified or licensed at various levels, many are attending collegiate programs toward Associate and Baccalaureate degrees at accredited colleges. All of the department's training is coordinated through the Training Officer.

-MUTUAL ASSISTANCE- Because appointments are not possible in emergency services, the Town of Beloit Fire Department maintains mutual aid agreements with over 500 Fire Departments through the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS) in northern Illinois and Southern Wisconsin. We are part of MABAS Division 104, which includes all of the Fire Departments in Rock County. There are two types of mutual aid assistance that we utilize; one is automatic mutual response, which is a pre-arranged response agreement to provide immediate response to predetermined incidents and locations. We currently have automatic agreements with Town of Turtle, Orfordville and the City of Beloit. The other form of mutual aid assistance is the MABAS mutual aid, which is a system (between over 500 Fire Departments) to provide assistance to each other in the event of an emergency that is beyond the normal capabilities of any community.

-SPECIALTY TEAMS- In recent years, many fire departments have taken on the additional responsibilities of providing assistance in mitigating emergencies in areas not traditionally serviced by fire service personel. These emergencies are hazardous materials response, confined space, high angle and technical rescue. While these types of emergencies do occur, the personnel with these abilities have joined forces and resources with other members within our MABAS agreement to provide a strong background in training, response, mitigation and resources that is cost prohibitive for individual departments. At the present time, we are members of the Stateline Regional Technical Rescue Team and are part of organizing a Regional Hazardous Materials Response Team with 5 other MABAS Divisions. Each of these response teams conduct their training on a monthly basis to remain proficient in these areas of expertise.

-FIRE PREVENTION/EDUCATION- Routine fire prevention inspections and assignments are conducted by our full-time personnel at all businesses in the Town. This includes pre-incident planning and identification of special hazards or conditions based on the particular business. Free home inspections are conducted by calling the Fire Station at 608-364-2997.

Public Education programs include a variety of topics that promote fire and life safety throughout the home and community. Personnel work with area schools to conduct classes both in the schools and in the Survice Alive House (www.jvlnet.com/fire/safety.html) behind Fire Station #1. The house, built by firefighters from a number of area departments, is similar to any home with the exception that theatrical smoke allows us to create conditions that children and adults, would be faced with in the event of a residentionl fire. There are also a wide variety of topics that range from fire safety education to Fire Station Tours and visits to neighborhood block parties. Personnel are always actively promoting safety within the community.

The Town of Beloit Fire Department takes great pride in providing quality services to you. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us at 608-364-2997 or stop by Fire Station #1, located at 2445 S. Afton Road.

The Town of Beloit Police department is pleased to announce the upcoming partnership with www.citizenobserver.com, an internet based crime prevention and community awareness group. By visiting the Town of Beloit Police Department page on the Citizen Observer website, citizens and businesses will be able to access information about home safety, scams, crime trends, wanted persons, missing persons, unsolved crimes, and other important information to make our community a safer place. The website will also offer a "Business Alert", which allows the Police to post bulletins notifying local businesses of goings on that could affect them. The website allows citizens to communicate with the police regarding their concerns, and any tips or information about crimes.

We feel that this can be a powerful crime prevention tool, and an excellent way of getting the community involved in making this a safer town for us all to live, work, and play in. Any questions, comments, or concerns can be addressed to Sgt. Richard Felger at the Police Department, 364-2984 extension 15 or emailed to rfelger@town.beloit.wi.us .
